About Us

Introduction

The Directorate of Archaeology has been playing a vital role for preservation and protection of the ancient monuments and archaeological sites of Assam since its inception. Established in the year 1961, Directorate of Archaeology has been working as an independent Directorate since August 1983. On 2nd August, 2003 the Directorate of Archaeology was brought under the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam. Upon the creation of a new administrative Department Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department vide Notification No. AR. 38/2021/34, Dated 30th July 2021the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam was brought under the Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department.

On 26th July 2024, Moidams - the Mound-Burial system of the Ahom Dynasty, Charaideo, Assam is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the 43rd World Heritage Property of India and the 3rd World Heritage Property of Assam and the 1st World Heritage Property in Cultural Category in Northeast India. The Mound-Burial system of the Ahom Dynasty was prepared by the Directorate of Archaeology, Department of Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture, Govt. Of Assam in collaboration with Guwahati Circle, Archaeological Survey of India.

International Seminar

Latest News

On 25th and 26th May 2024, an International Seminar on "Recent Archaeological Pursuits in Burial Traditions of South and South-East Asia" was organized. The seminar had papers related to various typologies of burial traditions, history of the Tai community and genetic studies. Attended by scholars from diverse backgrounds, Shri Y.S. Rawat, Director General, Archaeological Survey of India, Shri Ranjan Sharma, ACS, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department and Prof. J.N Phukan, Eminent Historian of Assam also graced the occasion.

On 1st March 2024, His Excellency Shri Vishal V. Sharma, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO in Paris, who is also the Chairman of the 46th World Heritage Committee visited the Moidams- the Mound Burial System of the Ahom dynasty at Charaideo, Assam. He was accompanied by other officials of the Govt.of Assam and Archaeological Survey of India.

National Seminar

Latest News

On 26th February 2024, a National Seminar on "Comprehensive Conservation of Moidams- the Mound Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty" was organized. The seminar had papers related to various aspects of conservation of the Moidams at Charaideo by various eminent historians, archaeologist, engineers and conservationists from different part of the country. The seminar was graced by the presence of Mr. Ranjan Sharma, ACS, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Assam, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department and Prof. J.N Phukan, Padmashree Awardee and Eminent Historian of Assam.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Convention sets out the duties of Member States, called State Parties, in identifying potential heritage sites— (i) cultural, (ii) natural and (iii) mixed, within their sovereign territories and their role in protecting and preserving them. By signing the Convention, each country pledges to conserve not only the World Heritage sites situated on its territory, but also to protect its national heritage.

Visiting Hours and Ticketing

The Mound-Burial system of the Ahom Dynasty at Charaideo is open throughout the year for visitors. The site is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. No entry fee for children and students till class XII. Read More
